Together, we will experience learning the safe and effective Tai Chi for Arthritis program, by sharing our tai chi experiences in an environment that doesn’t take who we are too seriously. My workshops tend to be light, encouraging, informative, and fun.
My workshop goals are:
My workshop goals are:
To present the Tai Chi for Arthritis form and program in a manner that encourages you to embrace the Tai Chi for Health philosophy of promoting wellness through tai chi in a safe and effective way.
To listen to your goals for enrolling in this workshop and to incorporate them, as appropriate, into the weeks activities.
And to have fun!
“As a newly graduated Physiotherapist, the experience of my first workshop was extremely positive. I did not expect to enjoy the practice of tai chi so much. My instructor was very welcoming and kind. I was impressed at his knowledge of human movement and anatomy. I loved the explanations by the instructor and the energy of the group.”
The workshop was “fun and informative, also a great way to relieve stress! …very relaxing techniques to help clients with arthritis. My shoulders started to feel better during the lessons.” (4th year doctoral program physical therapist)

You will learn both sets of forms which are based on Sun and Yang styles. They are complementary to, but different from, each other and from Tai Chi for Arthritis. Similar qualifications apply for certification. The programs are supported by Diabetes Australia and Osteoporosis Australia respectively, also suitable for a beginner for personal growth and health improvement.
Instructor - Dr Pam Kircher
This course is particularly designed for exercise instructors and health care professionals who work in Wellness Centers, Senior Centers and hospitals since it emphasizes safety and improved health for older adults and people with diabetes and osteoporosis. Both programs were designed by doctors, tai chi experts and physical therapists. The course will teach not only the forms but also give basic information about diabetes and osteoporosis as well as the research that supports introducing tai chi to seniors and people with chronic conditions. Participants will also learn effective ways to teach tai chi to this population.
A week at Holyoke amongst the trained and the untrained was a gift to me, like a beautiful gem. Openness, sharing, a beautiful balance of intrinsic and extrinsic emotions...all of this and much more is what I experienced. The instructors were thorough, most knowledgeable, very caring and supportive in their approach. The TCO and TCD 1 week session gave me what I needed to continue my weekly teaching classes!! y caring and supportive in their approach. This set is the world's most popular Tai Chi Forms, a logical progression for the pre-conference workshop participants. Based on the Yang Style, it is gentle and graceful. Learning this set will give you a solid foundation in Tai Chi.
Instructor - Dr Stephanie Taylor
We will learn the 24 form Yang Style. This is the most popular form in the world. It is a great beginner's class, but it is also a good class for an experienced practitioner who would like to learn a new form. If you are teaching the Tai Chi for Diabetes form, this would be you next training step.
As a beginner, you will be able to learn the 24 movements and develop a level of comfort with practicing this on your own. If you are Teaching Tai Chi for Diabetes, you already know some of the movements. You will be able to understand the Yang style in greater Depth and appreciate its unique energetic quality. If you are a practitioner of another style, you will be able to appreciate the 24 Forms as an exercise in Tai Chi Essential Principles.

Whether Tai Chi is practiced for health or martial arts, the end result is deeper relaxation, better balance and a clearer connection of self and nature. Tai Chi is a living expression of how harmony, through the principles of yin and yang, is reflected through the integration of body and mind.
In this workshop, we will explore the principles and secrets of Tai Chi as reflected through the Yang 24 Forms. Experience and learn how to deepen your practice and relaxation, to more fully appreciate the complexity and effortless of the movements, and to support your personal Tai Chi journey into the beauty and flow of what many consider to be the ultimate exercise for body and mind.

Sun Style Tai Chi is well known for its smooth, flowing movements, upright posture and unique footwork. This style of Tai Chi contains powerful Qi Gong and is ideal for developing stamina and healing. Participants will learn the 73 forms framework. Particular attention will be paid to hand positions, postural alignment, footwork sequences and follow stepping and the unique rhythm and pacing that is characteristic of Sun Style. By the end of this one week, each participant should feel confident enough to continue developing their own personal Sun 73 practice and begin to incorporate it into their daily lives.

What you will Learn:
You will learn how the Sun 73 Forms sequence flows.
You will experience the subtle power of Sun Tai Chi agile stepping.
You will develop an appreciation for the depth of Qigong within Sun Tai Chi.
The flow of the Sun 73 Forms comes from the integration of transition to form. To be able to express this seamless flow rest in developing the awareness of one’s upright posture, and a mindful awareness of controlling the shifting of one’s weight.
The subtle power of Sun Tai Chi agile stepping requires the waist to loosen to sink the Qi to the Dantien. In this way, the Essential Tai Chi Principle of substantial and insubstantial develops the subtle power in empty stepping, with a follow step.
From Robin Malby’s students:
“I have taken Robin’s Sun Style class for over two years. She teaches with grace, humor and wisdom. Learning Tai Chi can be intimidating. Robin’s ability to break down a challenging sequence of movements step by step, while teaching many layers of Tai Chi principles, empowers her students to work hard and be patient with themselves. Her passion for Tai Chi comes shining through.” Angie Lambert, Holistic Health Educator and TCA instructor.

“I have been taking Sun Style Tai Chi under Robin’s instruction for several years. Not only do I notice improvement in balance and strength but a calming of my mind that helps me cope with daily stress. Robin adds a level of enjoyment to the class with her positive attitude. I plan to make Tai Chi a part of my life for many years.” Janice Cremolini, Tai Chi student.
Student quote about Sun Style:
"My tai chi practice started as an avenue toward health and mobility; it has slowly, almost unknowingly, become a teacher on how to live. I particularly love the Sun Style for its visible teaching of Yin and Yang: the yang of the martial arts components of strength and the yin of flow and breath. Each time I stop for an open and close, it is a reminder to breathe deeply, appreciatively." Mary Knott, tai chi student and teaching assistant

From Troyce Thome's student:
The one week workshop with Troyce was an amazing and wonderful experience for me and I think for the whole group. She not only taught us the 73 Sun Form, she also made us to be a team, the "Peng Jing" team as we still call ourselves. We started as individuals on Monday and we did our "performance" on Saturday as a very tight and strong group, being nervous together, laughing and crying together. And Troyce was not just the teacher, she was part of this group and she made us feel strong.
For me Troyce used the right words and examples to let me feel and experience Tai Chi. To let me feel my own Chi and the Chi of the whole group.
One of the things she said was:
"Bring your hands in front of your heart, open and close". This image helped me to learn to sink (relax) my shoulders, elbows and hands in a way I wasn't able to do before.
I use this quote in my own Tai Chi classes, and I can see that it works for my students too.
Thank you Troyce for being my teacher and I am looking forward seeing you again in June!

Instructor - Caroline Demoise
When you contemplate spending a week with a form you know and love, you are seeking a deeper relationship with the principles that underlie all taijiquan forms. What are the qualities of awareness and execution that transform movement into tai chi? In Memphis we will explore this question through the application of principles to the movements of Sun 73.
Come knowing the sequence from memory and by the end of the workshop, you will have a better feel for centerline alignment as you move through the form, how to create softness and fluidity in your body, how to cultivate stillness within movement, how to be aware and focused during practice and how to develop a relationship with your energy body. Here are some comments from students who took the Depth class last year.
“There is something magical about spending an entire week learning more about a tai chi set you ‘think’ you already know. Caroline’s Depth of Sun 73 went beyond teaching the forms; it opened my eyes, body, and mind to the energy, beauty, and softness in each movement. All I can say is “Wow, when can I do it again?”
Jim Starshak, Kansas
“Last year my wife and I took Caroline’s Depth of 73 Form class and it was awesome. Caroline is a great teacher with a deep knowledge of the principles of tai chi and we really felt this class helped us to increase our level of internal practice in tai chi. If you wish to learn more depth of principles and details of the Sun 73 Form we recommend this class.”
Bill and Linda Pickett, Tennessee
“Caroline has a very good eye and presentation approach. Being a teacher, I know how difficult it is to work with a group of people of varying skill levels and backgrounds. She did well joining with the students and ensuring a grasp of the material at their level. Quite often the words of the teacher will be more fully understood later down the road as the student evolves. Arnold Schwarzenegger I think said it best - 'Listen to me now. Hear me later!'

The set contains the characteristics of the four major Tai Chi styles, namely Yang, Chen, Wu and Sun. It is well-balanced, enjoyable and is adopted by most major international competitions.
Instructor - Susan Scheuer
The Combined 42 Forms is, as its name suggests, a combination of movements from four major styles of Tai Chi, namely Chen, Yang, Wu and Sun. It is a beautifully composed, balanced set of movements.
You will find learning this set to be more fun and less daunting a task if you prepare beforehand. I highly recommend that you gain some familiarity with the movements by working with Dr Lam's Combined 42 Forms DVD prior to the workshop.
If you have already studied the 24 Forms, you will recognize some familiar friends among the 42, but you will also discover plenty of new and challenging movements to hold your interest. I never tire of practicing this set and look forward to exploring its intricacies with you.

The Combined 42 Forms routine is interesting and challenging. It requires focus, patience and commitment to attain a level where one is comfortable in performing solo and as a member of a group. At the Mt Holyoke workshop. Susan, our instructor, and all new Tai Chi friends in the class met those requirements as individuals and group. The week was filled with hard work, laughter, friendship and a sense of accomplishment. When we completed our group performance Saturday afternoon, there were some teary eyes in the group and, I believe, we all felt --WOW!

Created to complement the Combined 42 Forms, the 42 sword is a beautiful extension of the essential principles of four major styles of Tai Chi.
Instructor - Ralph Dehner
I have found the sword forms to be an excellent way to deepen my Tai Chi practice. I especially like the 42 Combined Sword Forms because of the mix of soft and explosive energies, the athleticism of many of the forms and the gracefulness of the set overall.
I have been teaching this set for more than 5 years now and enjoy it thoroughly. Last year we had a small class at MT. Holyoke and enjoyed learning from each other with focus training and fun at the same time.
It shares the similar traits with the competition routine of 42 Form Tai Chi Chuan in its technical characteristics as the posture is elegant with the force / intention penetrating onto the sword as the movements are agile and steady, with a balance of softness and hardness.
I especially like this quote when describing the 42 Sword;
"42 Combined Sword Forms - You can take your Tai Chi practice to a new level by exploring the swords forms. " This competition routine contains the “silk reeling power” of the Chen, the graceful strength of the Yang, the exquisite subtleties of the Wu, and the flexible agility of the Sun."*

"Learning and practicing the 42 Sword Form gives your personal tai chi practice a new depth. While the form is beautiful and graceful, it also provides an opportunity to practice extending your qi. This is a unique opportunity to grow in your personal practice and depth of tai chi as you utilize the techniques you already know while learning the new techniques of a sword form. I highly recommend this form to any participant who wants to move beyond the basics. Ralph Dehner is an inspiring instructor and the opportunity to learn from him is an opportunity not to be missed, regardless of the form he teaches. If you’ve admired watching previous classes demonstrate the form or have always wanted to try a sword form, this is a great opportunity."

The 42 sword class in 2008 was a small intimate group which received almost individual tuition. It’s a challenging form for both the students and the instructor, but Ralph Dehner’s easy going, non-threatening and encouraging teaching style combined with his knowledge of the form ensured that each of us had a wonderful, instructive and fulfilling week.

Originated from China based on yang style, this Tai Chi Fan set combines both martial and monastic qualities, expressing the ultimate in yin and yang.
Instructor - Shelia Rae
WHY REGISTER FOR THE FAN CLASS ?
Would it be to learn the graceful, flowing movements? Find the beauty in combining yin and yang; the monastic and the martial? It might be, or it might be much much more !!!
It is a different feeling to do Tai Chi with a weapon in your hand, but to do so provide the student with skills that will enhance all his tai chi forms exponentially.
The spiraling movements in the Fan Form will transcend and transform your empty-handed form in many ways. Tai Chi Fan is based on Yang style, but no matter what form you know and practice now, the Fan class will enhance that form.
Yes, you learn a beautiful form, but the emphasis in the class is on the principles of tai chi and learning the form enhances spiraling ( silk-reeling ), empty stepping, weight shifting techniques and improving flow.
Join me and I’ll take you on a journey of fan, form and fun!
Hi! My name is Jan Davis and I live in Hervey Bay Queensland Australia. In January 2008 at Dr. Lam’s workshop I enrolled in the moving in stillness fan form, I was very worried how I would learn 53 moves in one week. My goal was to learn more about Yang tai chi and experience this moving in stillness fan. What a wonderful week with a very experienced teacher, I learned about the concept of Yin and Yang how to use the fan as a weapon and how to move and flow in harmony.
“Martial art and dance became one”.
Moving in Stillness Fan Form is about spiralling energy in the body, I would like to thank Shelia Rae for my wonderful week and helping me to obtain my goals.
Jan Davis
"The Fan Form Class with MT Shelia Rae improved my Tai Chi and understanding of Tai Chi Principles.
Mental focus is necessary to coordinate the hand movements of this form while the continuous pivoting foot movements require awareness of weight shifts and keeping joints open and loose."

Chen style is characterised by softness and hardness complementing each other, fastness and slowness intermixed. Learn this shorter set to experience the spiral force and inner energy of the style.
Instructor - Troyce Thome
This workshop is designed to explore the internal energy expressed in Chen Style Tai Chi. The class will focus on reeling silk and spiral energy especially apparent in the Chen Style. Since the class will only be covering the first 12 movements of the Chen 36 form the class will focus more on the internal and applications of movements than on the choreography of movement.
The class is an excellent choice for the beginning Chen student as well as the advanced student of Chen seeking deeper understanding of the movements.
"Troyce is absolutely a world class trainer & teacher. Her thorough knowledge and teaching methods, as well as attention to each student and the group as a whole, resulted in a unique learning experience, one I often revisit in my now daily practice of the 73 form."
Joe Higgins
Troyce took all the different kinds of people that we are-different personalities, backgrounds-talents-and shaped us into a powerful elixir, The Peng Jing team. She seemed to know about every aspect of making us into a team. She taught us how to walk on and off the stage, how to practice hard but also how to rest, broke her teachings into little amounts that were just right, but then had us string them together when she thought we could handle it, didn't criticize a mistake but waited until we got it right and then would compliment us.
I'm just describing the parts of her teaching that were above and beyond anything I expected. I had expected to be taught the details of the set, and she did all of that, but went way beyond too. Just a small detail, one of hundreds, was to look beyond your hands when doing waving hands in the cloud.
Her secret vision, that she told us near the end of the week, was that we were performing at the Olympics. That pushed our view of ourselves to a higher place, and that formed a group that is still friends and e- mailing each other regularly. I thank Troyce and we thank Troyce.
Michael Irwin
“Troyce made our week of learning the difficult moves of the 73 Form so much fun, especially since we got to play with toys. You’ll have to take her class to find out how magical Tai Chi can be!"

Chen style has many features (as with class 10), much complexity and is more vigorous. It is powered by a sophisticated spiral force (chan suu jin), ideal to expand skill for advanced practitioners.
Instructor - Pat Lawson
We will explore the softness of the power in Chen, and smooth the transitions between the postures in the form. At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to practice the complete set and begin to explore their own expression through the movements.

Exploring the inner principles to improve your depth and skill of this more challenging set and to expand skill for advanced practitioners.
Instuctor: Dan Jones
The "Exploring the Depth of Chen" class is for students who have already taken the Chen 36 and are ready to take their forms to the next level. What make "Tai Chi Chuan" the "Supreme Ultimate Boxing" are the internal principles it's based on. This class will teach students how to apply internal energy and principles such as mind, spiral force, yin & yang, etc., to every movement in the Chen 36 form. We will have a whole week of depth training to help each student's tai chi skills take a "quantum leap". The class may be challenging at times but the internal foundation exercises open and loosen the joints, enhance qi circulation, help you to put "mind" into every movement and are a lot of fun. They also bring a very nice and relaxed feeling to the entire body and mind. One thing is for sure, you will have a great time improving your tai chi skills.
"I had the great fortune to learn Taijiquan from a Master. Instruction was clear and precise. Generous in giving of his time, patient with every question, I felt supported and reassured in my process of learning. Of great benefit was the vast knowledge of the internal workings of Chen, such as spiral force and silk drawing force. I loved the intermixing of slow and fast movements with hardness complementing softness. This experience opened new vistas and dimension to my practice of tai chi."
Viola Everett – Monroe, Michigan USA

Chen Forms are clearly more complex than other Taiji Forms I've tried. Along with the complexity is the challenge of harmonizing the expressive external releases inherent in Chen with the rich internal movement of Qi that's generated. Especially for someone with a Martial Arts background it's the perfect blend of Yin and Yang.
Master Teacher Sifu Dan Jones helps students navigate these complexities with grace, style and humor. I'm looking forward to my 3rd voyage with him this summer.

Thirteen years ago, Dr Paul Lam shared his vision of bringing Tai Chi enthusiasts together in a friendly interactive environment for Tai Chi progression, personal growth and enjoyment. With more friends joining each year, the team has now held 19 successful one week workshops in Sydney and the USA. They have been proven to be excellent training and networking. Well designed courses taught by experienced instructors in small groups, sharing ideas, morning talks and friendships are just some of the features. Years after years any participants travel thousands of miles for this unique and, considered by some, life-changing experience.
This year in USA, we have an exciting program with 12 individualized classes, and, for the first time, we are holding the workshop in a conference center. The Whispering Woods Hotel and Conference Center in Memphis is a first class hotel, with 24 hour service, fully air conditioned room and gourmet meals! With facilities such as these, we can concentrate on tai chi and enjoy the luxury. Read Shelia’s article in my February Newsletter highlighting the facilities and activities for your non tai chi partner.
To maintain the right balance of instructor’s ratio and personal interaction, we set strict limit the number of each class. Please enroll as soon as possible to ensure you get in your chosen class.
